Description

This is a smart and practical George V Sterling Silver Handled Sewing Piercer. The silver handle is teardrop shaped with inset line decoration and the steel piercer has a knopped base. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The sewing piercer, which was probably originally part of a sewing set now long dispersed, was made in Birmingham by silversmith Henry Clifford Davis and dates to 1929. Founded in 1901 in the heart of Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, Henry Clifford Davis produced a wide range of silverware from small personal items such as manicure sets and sewing kits up to large tea and coffee sets, candlesticks and candelabra. They became H.C. Davis Ltd in the early 1930s and remained in business into the 1960s.

Condition is good with just a couple of truly tiny dings to the silver handle and some wearing of the polished finish on the steel piercer, nothing that you wouldn't expect after over 90 years in a sewing basket. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The piercer is 10.9cm / 4.3ins long and weighs 14.1g / 0.50oz.

The hallmarks on the silver handle are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter E for 1929 and the H.C.D makers' mark for Henry Clifford Davis.
