Description

This is a smart Mid-Century Sterling Silver Tea Strainer. The tea strainer is circular with pierced scalloped handles extending on each side. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The tea strainer was assayed in London in 1966. The sponsors' mark of S M S is overstruck on top of the original makers' mark, which is something ending in F in three conjoined circles. So far we have not been able to identify the S M S mark, which is probably that of a retailer. It is possible that the mark beneath is one of those used by Deakin & Francis but it doesn't look quite right for that, so the maker remains a mystery.

Condition is very good, with no dings, dents or damage and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 55 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The tea strainer is 10.8cm / 4.2ins from handle to handle, 6.4cm / 2.5ins across the bowl and 1.2cm / 0.47ins deep. It weighs in at a very respectable 37.4g / 1.3oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the side of the body, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter l for 1966 and the S M S sponsors' mark overstruck on the original makers' mark.

Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the tea strainer.
