Description

Here we have a striking and unusual Edwardian Cranberry Glass Bowl on a Sterling Silver Stand. The round hand blown cranberry glass bowl has a flat base, a panelled body and a central rim of scallop shells supporting it on the base. The silver base has four long legs with fan tops and hoof feet linked by floral swags.

This may have originally been intended as a sugar bowl but it is a versatile piece that would work well for sauces on the dining table, could be filled with water for floating candles or sand for a tealight, would work well for nuts or snacks, could be filled with potpourri or merely kept as a decorative piece in its own right. The cranberry glass bowl could also be switched out for a small plant pot if desired.

The piece is made in Sheffield by well known silversmiths Atkin Brothers and dates to 1902. Tracing its roots back to Thomas Law in the mid-18th century, the Atkin family took sole control of the business in 1840, first as Henry Atkin & Co and then from 1853 as Atkin Brothers. The firm manufactured both silverware and electroplate in Sheffield and also had a London showroom. They ceased trading in 1958.

Condition is generally very good with no dings or dents in the silver stand which sits secure on its four feet without rocking. The cranberry glass bowl has a few tiny nibbles around its top rim but remains perfectly functional. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The bowl and stand are 11.5cm / 4.5ins in diameter and 11.5cm / 4.5ins high. The stand by itself weighs it at a very substantial 211.4g / 7.45oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together the set weighs 400.7g / 14.1oz.

The hallmarks, on the top rim of the stand, are crisp and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the Gothic date letter k for 1902 and the H A makers' mark for Harry Atkin of Atkin Brothers.

Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the set.
