Description

This is a smart Pair of George III Sterling Silver Salt Spoons in the classic Old English pattern. Both spoons have a crest of a stag engraved at the tops of the stems, although this has been quite rubbed by polishing over many long years.

The salt spoons were made in London in 1792, most probably by Thomas Northcote. Only the N of the makers' mark remains but by a process of elimination he is almost certainly the silversmith. Thomas Northcote was a specialist spoon maker who registered his first mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1776. He made a range of consistently good quality flatware up until the late 1790s and possibly into the early 1800s.

Condition is very good with just a couple of very shallow flat spots on the undersides of the bowls and the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 230 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each spoon is 10cm / 3.9ins long and the pair together weigh in at 19.3g / 0.68oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the undersides of the stems, are clear to read apart from the rubbing to the makers' mark. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the London date letter r for 1792, the George III duty mark and the partially erased ?N makers' mark, which is almost certainly that of Thomas Northcote.
