Description

This is an unusual early 20th Century Sterling Silver Letter Opener in the shape of an arrow head. THe arrow head itself is plain whilst the handled has moulded flower decoration on a textured background. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The letter opener was made by silversmiths Samuel Kirk & Son in Baltimore, Maryland, USA and dates to the period between 1896 and 1924. The firm was originally established as Kirk & Smith in 1815 but by 1821 Smith had departed and the name became just Samuel Kirk. In 1846 Samuel was joined by his son and the business became Samuel Kirk & Son and in 1896 Samuel Kirk & Son Co. By 1924 they had changed again to Samuel Kirk & Son Inc, which they retained until 1979 when the company finally became The Kirk Stieff Corporation.

Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The letter opener is 12.8cm / 5ins long and 2.1cm / 0.83ins across at the widest point. It weighs in at a respectable 25.7g / 0.91oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The opener is marked on the side of the handle with Kirk & Son Co, which gives us the date range of 1896 to 1924 and stamped 925 for Sterling Silver (925/1000 grade).
