Description

This is a fine pair of Art Deco Sterling Silver Four Slice Toast Racks. The toast racks have rectangular bases on four bracket feet with square topped arch dividers and finger ring handles on the central dividers.

The toast racks were made in Sheffield by Viner's Ltd and date to 1939, just before wartime silver restrictions came into force. Viner's was founded around 1900 by Adolphe Viener, who later Anglicized his family surname to Viner. Starting out as electroplaters, the firm moved into silverware in the early 1920s. They remained extremely successful up until the 1970s but later had difficulties and ceased trading in the 1980s. The Viner's brand name is now owned by Oneida.

Condition is very good with just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with age and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each toast rack is 7.5cm / 2.9ins long, 4.5cm / 1.8ins wide and stands 7.2cm / 2.8ins high. The pair together weigh in at a substantial 104.9g / 3.7oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the sides of the bases, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter w for 1939 and the E V makers' mark for Emile Viner of Viner's Ltd.
