Here we have a very stylish large Art Deco Sterling Silver Cigarette Case. The cigarette case is oblong with a curved back to fit snugly into a pocket. Both front and back have engine turned stripes with broader stripes in the middle and two bands of finer stripes to either side. The front has a rectangular blank cartouche and the inside is gilded.

The cigarette case was made in Birmingham by Charles S. Green & Co Ltd and dates to 1931. Charles Stevenson Green was a grandson of the original Charles Green who founded his firm in Birmingham in 1824, later becoming Charles Green & Son. Originally a partner in this firm with his brothers Lionel and Roland, Charles S. Green left in 1904 to set up his own company Charles S. Green & Co Ltd. Both companies were very successful with Charles S. Green & Co remaining in business up until around 1990 and Charles Green & Son still going strong today.

Condition is very good, with just one truly tiny crease in the cartouche on the front plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 90 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The cigarette case is of a good size measuring 10.7cm / 4.2ins wide, 7.9cm / 3.1ins high and 1.4cm / 0.55ins deep. It weighs in at a substantial 128.3g / 4.5oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the interior of the case, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter G for 1931 and the C S G & Co in a shield makers' mark for Charles S. Green & Co Ltd.
