Description
Here we have a top quality Victorian Sterling Silver Napkin Ring. The body of the ring is embossed with an intricate flowers and foliage design to either side of a circular cartouche which is elegantly engraved with the initials ER. The body has top and bottom borders of embossed circles and the rims are beaded. The napkin ring is made in London by renowned silversmith Charles Stuart Harris and dates to 1888. Charles Stuart Harris was the son and grandson of silversmiths and founded his own firm in 1852, probably taking over his father’s business. He established a reputation for top quality workmanship and supplied silverware to many high end stores as well as selling under his own name. The firm operated from a number of premises in Hatton Garden and Clerkenwell and in 1897 became C.S. Harris & Sons Ltd. In the early 1930s they were absorbed into Israel Freeman & Sons Ltd.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 135 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
As you would expect from Charles Stuart Harris, this is a well made piece in a good gauge of silver. The napkin ring is 4.8cm / 1.9ins in diameter and 3.7cm / 1.4ins deep. It weighs in at a very respectable 33.6g / 1.2oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks are quite well hidden within the pattern but once found are clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter N for 1888, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the C S H in a trefoil makers' mark for Charles Stuart Harris.
