Description

Here we have a fine quality pair of Victorian Sterling Silver Open Salts. The salts are cauldron shaped, standing on three hoof feet and with a beaded top rim. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The salts were made in London by renowned silversmiths Edward Baranard & Sons and date to 1876. Edward Barnard & Sons has a history that dates back to 1680 when the firm was established by Anthony Nelme. Through partnerships the Barnard family became involved in the silversmiths in 1773 and took control in 1829, renaming the firm Edward Barnard & Sons. Their most celebrated creation is the stunning silver gilt Lily Font from 1840, which forms part of the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London and has been used for Royal christenings ever since it was commissioned by Queen Victoria & Prince Albert.

The salts have definitely been used but overall condition is good, with just a couple of flat spots and a small dent on the bodies and the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 145 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each salt is 5.3cm / 2.1ins in diameter and stands 3.2cm / 1.2ins high. The pair together weigh in at a very respectable 78.5g / 2.77oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the undersides of the cauldrons, are clear to read with just a little rubbing to the makers' mark. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter A for 1876, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the distinctive quatrefoil makers' mark of J, E, W, J B for John, Edward, Walter & John Barnard of Edward Barnard & Sons.
