Description

This is an attractive, fine quality George V Cut Glass Fruit or Salad Bowl with a Sterling Silver Rim. The circular bowl has hobnail cut decoration around the body, a star cut base and a plain deep silver rim.

The bowl is made for and retailed by Kemp Brothers of Bristol and assayed in London in 1918. Founded in 1889 in Bristol and still going strong today, Kemp Brothers, now known just as Kemps, has a well earned reputation as a high quality jewellers and retail silversmiths. Between the 1910s and 1930s they registered their own silver mark in London and commissioned many items of domestic and personal silverware for sale in their store.

Condition is extremely good, with no chips or cracks in the glass bowl and no damage to the silver rim, just the overall superficial surface wear that has to be expected with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The bowl is 21cm / 8.3ins in diameter and 9cm / 3.5ins high. It weighs in at 1.22kg / 43.1oz.

The hallmarks on the silver rim are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the Gothic date letter c for 1918 and the K.B makers' mark for Kemp Brothers. It also has the retail stamp for Kemp Brothers, Bristol.
