Description

Here we have a fine pair of George III Sterling Silver Table Spoons in the classic Old English pattern. The spoons are engraved at the top of the stem with the crest and motto "Honesty Is Good Policy" of the Thomson family of Scotland.

The table spoons are made in London by renowned silversmiths William Eley and William Fearn and date to to 1806. William Eley registered his first mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1778 and worked alone for nearly 20 years before forming a partnership with William Fearn in 1797. They were joined between 1808 and 1814 by William Chawner who then left to form Chawner & Co. William Eley died in 1824 and the family business was continued by his three sons.

Condition is very good, with just a slight flat spot in one bowl plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 215 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each spoon is 21.5cm / 8.5ins long and the pair together weigh in at a substantial 125.2g / 4.4oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the undersides of the stems, are nice and clear to read with just the makers' marks being somewhat rubbed. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter L for 1806, the George III duty mark and the W E over W F makers' mark for William Eley and William Fearn.

Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the spoons.
