Description

Here we have an exceptional quality heavy 18th Century German Silver Spoon. The spoon has a long cast stem styled as an Ionic column with mask, leaf and shell decoration which extends onto the bowl with leaves to back and front. The top of the stem features a detailed finial of a man holding a bird.

The spoon was made in the German city of Augsburg in 1781-3. There is a heraldic style makers' mark of an eagle in the bowl, which we have been unable to identify. The independent city-state of Augsburg dominated high end silver production, especially of tableware, from the middle of the 16th century to the end of the 18th century and silversmiths from across Europe came there to set up business.

Condition is extremely good, quite remarkable given its age. It seems likely that this spoon has never been used but kept purely as a decorative item throughout its 240 years. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The spoon is 18.7cm / 7.36ins long and weighs in at a substantial 98.1g / 3.46oz of solid silver.

As mentioned above, there is a heraldic makers' mark in the bowl, which we have so far been unable to identify. On the back of the bowl is a date letter A for 1781-3 below a pine cone or acorn for Augsburg.
