Description

Here we have an elegant late Victorian Ceramic Vase in the Chiné Gilt style. The vase has a low foot, a bulbous body and a tall slender neck. The body is decorated in the chiné gilt style created by pressing lace into the clay shortly after the pieces had come off the wheel. After first firing this was then hand painted and gilded. The technique was developed by John Slater, Doulton's senior manager in the 1880s, and remained regularly in use until the First World War and occasionally in the 1920s and 1930s.

This vase was made at Doulton's Lambeth factory in London and is dated to 1899. The base is signed by John Broad, one of Doulton's most accomplished artists who had a long career at the Lambeth factory from 1873 to 1919. He is best known for his large scale pieces such as fountains and garden statuary but produced an enormous range of work of all shapes and sizes.

Condition is extremely good, with no chips, cracks or damage. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The vase stands 28cm / 11ins high and is 10cm / 3.9ins in diameter at its widest point. It weighs 748g / 26.4oz.

The underside of the base is a range of marks including the Doulton, Lambeth, England stamp, the Doulton & Slaters Patent stamp found on chiné ware, the date stamp 1899 and the script J B mark for John Broad.
