Description

This is a romantic and attractive Edwardian Sterling Silver Napkin Ring. The ring has a pierced body with a large central heart cartouche surrounded by pierced intertwining heart shapes made of flowers and foliage. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The napkin ring was made in Birmingham by silversmiths Reynolds & Westwood and dates to between around 1900 and 1910. The firm was founded by John Reynolds and George Frederick Westwood in the mid 1890s and operated out of premises in Vyse Street in Birmingham’s famous Jewellery Quarter. They produced a wide range of small silver items, mostly for personal use and of consistently good quality. The firm ceased trading around 1911.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, no damage to the pierced design and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 110 years of good service on the dining table. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The napkin ring is 4.6cm / 1.8ins in diameter and 3.2cm / 1.2ins deep. It weighs in at a very respectable 25.8g / 0.91oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, in the pierced section to the right of the heart cartouche, are well struck but the right hand end has been cut away by the pierced decoration, which has lost us the date letter. The remaining marks show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the upright anchor assay mark for Birmingham, which gives us a date of 1900 or later and the R & W makers' mark, with the W partly missing, for Reynolds & Westwood who ceased trading around 1911.
