Here we have a top quality George III Sterling Silver Bowl with a Gilt Interior. The bowl is oval with raised ends on each of which is a scroll and ring handle. The interior is gilded. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The bowl was made in London in 1812. The makers' mark is significantly rubbed but appears to be either S A for Stephen Adams Jnr, who was active between 1784 and 1815 or S H for Solomon Hougham, who was active between 1792 and 1818. Both made a wide variety of domestic items and tableware so either would be a likely candidate.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents just a small mark on either side where the ring handles have rubbed against the body over many long years plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect and some thinning of the gilding in places. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The bowl is 11.3cm / 4.4ins from handle to handle, 6.2cm / 2.4ins across and 4.8cm / 1.9ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 86.4g / 3.05oz of solid Sterling Silver.

Apart from the rubbed makers' mark, the hallmarks are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter R for 1812, the George III duty mark and the rubbed makers' mark, which we believe is either SA for Stephen Adams Jnr or SH for Solomon Hougham.
