Description

This is a smart pair of late Victorian Sterling Silver Salt Spoons in the fashionable Onslow pattern. The spoons have round bowls, twist stems and the distinctive Onslow fan finial. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The salt spoons were made by silversmith William Aitken and assayed in Chester in 1900. William Aitken founded his firm in Vyse Street in Birmingham’s famous Jewellery Quarter in the late 1880s. He produced a wide range of silverware for both domestic and personal use and had pieces assayed in both Birmingham and Chester. He remained in business into the early 1920s.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 120 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each spoon is 7cm / 2.75ins long and the pair together weigh in at a respectable 13.8g / 0.49oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the undersides of the bowls, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword & three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter R for 1900 and the W.A makers' mark for William Aitken.
