Description

Here we have a beautiful pair of late Victorian Cut Glass Vases with deep Sterling Silver Mounts. The vases are of tapered cylindrical shape with star cut bases and dogtooth and line cut bodies. The silver mounts have pierced triangles of roses and scrolls coming down the body and crimped rims above a deep collar.

The pair of vases are made in Birmingham by well known silversmiths James Deakin & Sons and date to 1900, the last full year of Queen Victoria's long reign. James Deakin founded the firm in 1866 and by 1878 and had been joined by his son William as partner, with two further sons joining in the 1880s. The company was very successful with manufacturing in Sheffield & Birmingham and showrooms in London, Glasgow and Belfast. In 1935 they were involved in an ill-fated merger which led to the company's collapse within a couple of years.

Condition is very good, with no chips or cracks in the glass and no fogging. There are no dings or dents in the silver and no damage to the pierced sections. They have clearly been well looked after for over 120 years. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each vase stands 10.3cm / 4ins high and is 6.3cm / 2.5ins in diameter. The pair together weigh 375.1g / 13.2oz.

The hallmarks, around the central rose on one triangular panel on each vase, are nice and clear to read with just a little rubbing to the makers' marks. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter a for 1900 and the JD over WD makers' mark for John & William Deakin of James Deakin & Sons.

Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the vases.
