Description

This is a good quality George V Sterling Silver Pepper Shaker from the 1930s. The shaker has a pear shaped body standing on three hoof feet. The shaker top has a pie crust rim and a flame finial. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The pepper shaker is made in London by J.B. Chatterley & Sons and dates to 1930. John Bishop Chatterley started his firm in the 1880s becoming J.B. Chatterley & Sons Ltd in 1896. They manufactured in Birmingham and had a showroom in London's Hatton Garden district. They produced a wide range of both silverware and electroplate and remained in business into the mid-1990s.

Condition is very good with just three truly tiny dings in the body to one side of the hallmark plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 90 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The pepper shaker stands 8.2cm / 3.2ins high and is 4.6cm / 1.8ins across at its widest point. It weighs in at 50.2g / 1.77oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on the side of the body and the inside rim of the lid are nice and clear to read with just the makers' mark being somewhat rubbed but still easily identifiable. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the Gothic date letter p for 1930 and the J B C & S Ld in a shield makers' mark for J.B. Chatterley & Sons Ltd.
