Here we have a very attractive Edwardian Sauce Bottle in a Sterling Silver Sleeve. The glass sauce bottle is hand blown and fits perfectly into the silver sleeve. The stopper is cork with a Sterling Silver top. The sleeve has a Green Man face below the blank cartouche which is surrounded by pierced scrolls, flowers and trellis.

The sauce bottle is made in Birmingham by silversmith Henry Matthews and dates to 1902. Henry Matthews registered his mark in 1893 and ran his firm from premises in Vittoria Street in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter. He made a very wide range of good quality silverware and remained in business up until around 1930.

Condition is very good with just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 120 years of good service on the dining table. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The sauce bottle stands 12.2cm / 4.8ins high and is 4.4cm / 1.7ins in diameter. The sleeve by itself weighs 29.0g / 1oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together it weighs in at 144.2g / 5.1oz.

The hallmarks, to the left of the central cartouche, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter c for 1902 and the H M makers' mark for Henry Matthews. The silver cap has also been hallmarked but this has largely been rubbed away.
