Description

Here we have an elegant pair of George III Sterling Silver Table Salts with Blue Glass Liners. The salts are oval in shape, with pierced bodies and beaded rims and stand on four claw and ball feet. The pierced bodies have scrolling, intertwining vines surrounding blank cartouches. The blue glass liners have star cut bases.

The salts are made in London and date to 1777. Unfortunately the makers' mark on both salts has completely rubbed away so we are unable to say who made them.

Condition is very good, with no damage to the pierced sections, no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 245 years of service on the table. The blue glass liners are hand made 18th century glass with the imperfections that you would expect. One liner has a small chip to the rim but is still perfectly usable. The salts are 7.8cm / 3ins long by 6cm / 2.3ins across and stand 5cm / 1.9ins high. Without the blue glass liners the pair weigh in at a substantial 112.2g / 3.96oz of solid Sterling Silver and all in they weigh 297.9g / 10.5oz.

The hallmarks, on the undersides of the bottom rims, are a little rubbed but still easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London and the date letter b for 1777. As per above, any makers' mark has sadly been polished away.
