Description

Here we have an unusually shaped George V Sterling Silver Four Slice Toast Rack. The toast rack has a rectangular base with rounded corners and stands on four bun feet. The dividers are star shaped and the finger ring handle is oval. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The toast rack is made in Birmingham by Joseph Gloster Ltd and dates to 1921. Joseph Gloster registered his first mark at the Birmingham assay office in 1888 and set up business at the Lion Silver Works. The firm produced a very wide range of silverware and quickly became successful, becoming Joseph Gloster Ltd in 1901. They remained in business up until around 1980.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 100 years of service on the breakfast table. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The toast rack is 11cm / 4.3ins long, 5.6cm / 2.2ins wide and stands 8.1cm / 3.2ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 84.0g / 2.96oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on one end of the base, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter w for 1921 and the J G Ltd makers' mark for Joseph Gloster Ltd.

Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the toast rack.
