Description

This is a Victorian Cut Glass Bottle with a Sterling Silver pierced lid. The base of the bottle is star cut whilst the body has deep cut high pointed arches on it rising towards a thick hexagonal collar and neck with the silver pierced lid seated on the top.

The bottle may have been used as a sugar caster, although it is an unusual shape for this, or it may have been for sprinkling something onto food, perhaps a liquid such as worcester sauce or vinegar. It's possible it may have been for sprinkling holy water although there are no religious symbols on it. It would work extremely well for sprinkling cocoa powder or cinnamon onto your cappucino.

The lid is hallmarked for London, 1863 and has a makers' mark which appears to be S.T over S.P but the second letters are somewhat rubbed and it is hard to be certain. We haven't been able to identify this maker.

Condition is extremely good, with no chips or cracks in the glass, just a couple of truly tiny dings in the lid and the superficial surface wear that has to be expected with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The bottle is 16.7cm / 6.57ins high and 5cm / 1.96ins in diameter. The lid by itself weighs a very respectable 22.9g / 0.81oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together the bottle weighs in at 345.6g / 12.2oz.

The hallmarks, on the side of the lid, are a little rubbed but can be read for the most part. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter h for 1863, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the mysterious makers' mark, which we think is S.T over S.P.
