Description

Here we have a fine quality George III Sterling Silver Table Salt with its original Blue Glass Liner. The salt is oval in shape and stands on four claw and ball feet. The front of the salt has a cartouche featuring a crest of a lion rising from a crown, whilst the rest of the body is decorated with swags and neo-classical urns.

The table salt was made in London in 1780 and has the makers' mark I.B. This mark has been used a number of times down the years but at this particular date it is most likely to be that of John Bourne who was originally in partnership with Thomas Moore from 1770 and then set up on his own in 1774. Not many pieces by him are known so it's hard to be 100% certain but we believe it's most probably John Bourne.

Condition is very good with no dings or dents to the body and just a little waving to the bottom rim. It stands securely on a flat surface without rocking. The glass liner has no chips or cracks just the ripples and tool marks normally associated with hand made 18th century glass. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The salt is 8.3cm / 3.2ins long, 6cm / 2.3ins wide and stands 5cm / 1.9ins high. Without the blue glass liner it weighs an impressive 52.0g / 1.8oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together it weighs in at 115.1g / 4oz.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the bottom rim are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter e for 1780 and the I.B makers' mark, most probably that of John Bourne.

Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the table salt.
