Description

This is a fine quality cased Edwardian Sterling Silver Spoon & Fork set, which would have originally been made as a Christening gift and remains ideal for that as it has no initials, dates or personalisation engraved onto the pieces.

The spoon and fork are made in Sheffield by Joseph Rodgers & Sons and date to 1909. Joseph Rodgers set up his firm in 1843, becoming Joseph Rodgers & Sons in 1862, when his son George became a partner in the business. They were very accomplished silversmiths and electroplaters with manufacturing in Sheffield and a showroom in London's Holborn Viaduct, home to many high end retailers at the time. They remained in business into at least the early 1970s.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the barest minimum of superficial surface wear. The box is also in very good gondition and this has clearly been a treasured possession for over 110 years. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The spoon is 13.5cm / 5.3ins long and the fork is 15.3cm / 6ins long. The two together, unboxed, weigh in at 60.0g / 2.1oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the undersides of the stems, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the Gothic date letter r for 1909 and the J R makers' mark and star and cross trademark for Joseph Rodgers & Sons.
