Description

Here we have a fine quality and very ornate cased Edwardian Sterling Silver Teatime Set comprising of six teaspoons, a pair of sugar tongs, a jam spoon and a butter knife. The pieces are double struck with a design on the front featuring an ionic column festooned with floral swags and on the back a thread and shell design with more floral swags and floral backs to the bowls. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The set is made in Sheffield by James Deakin & Sons and dates to 1909. James Deakin founded the firm in 1866 and by 1878 and had been joined by his son William as partner, with two further sons joining in the 1880s. The company was very successful with manufacturing in Sheffield and showrooms in London, Glasgow and Belfast. In 1935 they were involved in an ill-fated merger which lead to the company's collapse within a couple of years.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 110 years of good service. The box is a bit scuffed on the outside but in very nice condition on the inside. It has a gold stamp on the satin lining of the lid for the retailer Saqui & Son of The Strand in London. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The teaspoons are 11.1cm / 4.4ins long, the jam spoon is 12.3cm / 4.8ins long, the butter knife is 13.9cm / 5.5ins long and the sugar tongs are 10.5cm / 4.1ins long. All together the set, unboxed, weighs in at a substantial 138.2g / 4.87oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on the all the pieces are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the Gothic date letter r for 1909 and the JD over WD makers' mark for James & William Deakin of James Deakin & Sons.

Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the set.
