Description

This is an elegant George III Sterling Silver Cream Jug from the beginning of the 19th century. The cream jug has a flat oval base and a band of serpentine vine engraving around the middle of the body. The initials J D S are engraved in the script style of the period in a cartouche on the front of the jug.

The cream jug was made in Sheffield by Thomas Law and dates to 1803. Thomas Law's firm was founded in the early 1770s but he passed away in 1775. The firm was continued under his name by his sons John & William up until at least 1810.

Condition is good with just three tiny dings on one side of the body plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 220 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The cream jug measures 11.5cm / 4.5ins from lip to handle, 6.5cm / 2.5ins across the body and 10.1cm / 4ins in height. It weighs in at a substantial 96.2g / 3.4oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on the underside of the base are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned date letter F for Sheffield, 1803, the George III duty mark and the T L makers' mark for Thomas Law.
