Description

Here we have a fine quality pair of large Edwardian Sterling Trumpet Vases in the organic Art Nouveau style. The vases have circular bases, which are weighted for stability, from which the tall stem tapers upwards and outwards to form the petals of the trumpet which have beading along the top rim.

The vases are made in London by Horace Woodward & Co and date to 1908. Horace Woodward joined the partnership of George Cartwright and Joseph Hirons in 1853. Hirons retired in 1859 and Cartwright in 1865 leaving Horace Woodward as the sole owner. He in turn retired in 1883 but the company continued in his name up until 1919 when it was purchased by Adie Brothers. The company manufactured in both Birmingham and London and had a showroom in London's prestigious Hatton Garden district.

Whilst the vases have definitely been used, overall condition is good and most importantly there are no splits in the silver. There is a dent in the base and a small ding in the body of one vase and some minor flattening around the rims of both. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The vases are of a considerable size, standing 29cm / 11.4ins high and measuring 12.7cm / 5ins across the top rims. The two together weigh in at 1.85kg / 65oz, which obviously includes the filler material in the bases.

The hallmarks, on the upper parts of the bodies, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter n for 1908 and the quatrefoil H W & Co Ld makers' mark for Horace Woodward & Co Ltd.

Shipping in the UK is £12 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the vases.
