Description

This is an elegant George IV Sterling Silver Decanter Label or Wine Ticket on a chain. It is octagonal in shape with a threaded border and the word SHERRY is neatly engraved on the front.

The decanter label was made in London in 1827 by silversmith JJ. There were a number of silversmiths in London at this time who had a JJ mark and it is impossible to say exactly who the maker was.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, no damage to the chain and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 195 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The decanter label is 4.2cm / 1.65ins by 2.4cm / 0.94ins and it is 9.7cm / 3.82ins from the bottom of the label to the top of the chain. It weighs in at 8.2g / 0.29oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the back of the label, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter m for 1827, the George IV duty mark and the J.J makers' mark.
