Description

This is a charming late Victorian Sterling Silver Bonbon or Trinket Dish. The circular dish has pierced sides and an embossed rim of scrolls and flowers. The base has a delightful embossed image of a winged cherub reaching out to a butterfly against a background of flowers.

The dish is made in Birmingham by silversmiths Adie & Lovekin and dates to 1896. Founded in 1863 by James Adie and Alfred Lovekin, the firm specialised in fancy goods and particularly sewing related items. Their pin cushions are highly collectable. The original partners passed away in 1913 and 1912 and the firm carried on until around 1930.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, no damage to the pierced sections and just the minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 125 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The dish is 11.5cm / 4.5ins in diameter and stands 2.8cm / 1.1ins high. It weighs a respectable 35.3g / 1.2oz of soliod Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the Gothic date letter w for 1896 and the A & L.Ld makers' mark for Adie & Lovekin Ltd.
