Description

This is a smart set of four Victorian Sterling Silver Coffee Spoons in the distinctive Onslow pattern. The pattern is defined by a scrolled fan top to the stem and was originally introduced in the late 18th century and then revived in the late 19th / early 20th century. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The coffee spoons are made in London by renowned silversmiths William Hutton & Sons Ltd and date to 1893. William Hutton began the firm in Birmingham in 1800 before moving to Sheffield in 1832. Hugely successful, they would retain their Sheffield HQ but also opened factories in London and back in Birmingham and had a London showroom in Holborn. The firm remained in the Hutton family until 1930 when it became part of James Dixon & Sons.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after nearly 130 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each spoon is 10.8cm / 4.2ins long and the set of four together weighs in at a respectable 44.6g / 1.57oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the backs of the bowls, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter S for 1893 and the E H makers' mark for Edward Hutton who was head of William Hutton & Sons at that time.
