Description

This is an attractive pair of George V Sterling Silver Large Teaspoons in the traditional Fiddle pattern. The spoons have engraving down the front of the stem and the top of the stem has a pair of crossed rifles with the letters U N A C surrounding them and the initials H.L.T below them. We assume this is a shooting club of the time and these spoons may have been a prize awarded to H.L.T for a club competition but we have not been able to identify them specifically.

The spoons are made in Sheffield by silversmiths Joseph Rodgers & Sons and date to 1926. Joseph Rodgers entered his first Sheffield mark in 1843 with the firm becoming Joseph Rodgers & Sons around 1862. They were a very successful firm making a wide range of silverware and were still in business until at least the late 1960s.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, just a very slight kink in one stem plus the superficial surface wear that would expect after this period of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each spoon is 13.6cm / 5.3ins long and the pair together weigh in at a very respectable 42.5g / 1.5oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the undersides of the stems, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter i for 1926 and the J.R & S makers' mark plus their trademark star & cross for Joseph Rodgers & Sons Ltd.
