Description

This is a smart Mid-Victorian Sterling Silver Open Salt. The salt is shaped as a shallow cauldron with a beaded rim standing on three claw and ball feet. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The salt is made in London by silversmith Robert Harper and dates to 1864. Harper registered his mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1853 and worked from premises in Red Lion Street, Clerkenwell, the heart of London's manufacturing silversmiths in the 19th century. He produced a wide range of pieces, both large and small and remained in business into the 1880s.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no salt corrosion and just the minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected after nearly 160 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The salt is 4.9cm / 1.9ins in diameter and stands 2.9cm / 1.1ins high. It weighs in at a respectable 30.3g / 1oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter i for 1864, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the R H in conjoined circles makers' mark for Robert Harper.
