Description

Here we have a fine set of four early 19th century Scottish Provincial Sterling Silver Dessert Spoons from Dundee in the classic Fiddle pattern. The spoons have the arms and motto (sto pro veritate - I stand for the truth) of Clan Guthrie engraved on the top of the stem. Clan Guthrie held various lands, including Guthrie Castle and the Barony of Craigie, in the vicinity of Dundee, so it is logical that they would order their silverware from a local silversmith.

The spoons are well made in a heavy gauge of silver by Alexander Cameron of Dundee who was active between 1818 and 1849. Cameron made a wide variety of items including flatware, domestic silver, jewellery, watches and clocks.

Condition is very good with just one truly tiny ding in one bowl and the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 175 years or more of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each spoon is 17.6cm / 6.9ins long and the set of four together weigh in at a very substantial 160.2g / 5.6oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The provincial hallmarks, on the undersides of the stems, are well struck and clear to read. The show the thistle for Scottish Sterling Silver, the pot of lilies and the DUN/DEE stamp for Dundee, and the letter C and CAM/ERON stamp for Alexander Cameron.

Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the spoons.
