Description

This is a striking vintage Norwegian 830 Silver Salt in the shape of a Viking Longboat complete with its clear glass liner. The longboat stands on four feet, one each fore and aft and two amidships. There is a row of shields along each side and the prows are shaped as dragon heads. The glass liner has a scalloped rim.

The salt is made by Brødrene Lohne (Lohne Brothers) in Bergen, Norway and dates to around the 1950s or possibly early 1960s. Founded by brothers Alf and Johan Lohne in 1921, the firm specialised in pieces celebrating Norway's Viking and folk art heritage. In more recent times they principally produced jewellery and spoons and were eventually bought out by Theodor Olsens in 2011.

Condition is very good with no dings, dents or damage and just some light salt corrosion to the inside of the longship under the glass liner. The liner has no chips or cracks. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The salt measures 8cm / 3.1ins long by 3.6cm / 1.4ins across and stands 5.2cm / 2ins high. Without the glass liner it weighs a respectable 20.2g / 0.71oz of solid silver and all together it weighs in at 30.1g / 1.06oz.

The side of the ship, next to one row of shields, is stamped 830S for 830/1000 grade silver along with the distinctive Lo makers' mark for Brødrene Lohne.

Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the salt.
