Description

This is a smart George III Sterling Silver Salt Spoon in the traditional Old English pattern. The spoon has the letter W elegantly engraved at the top of the stem.

The salt spoon is made by silversmith Richard Evans and assayed in London in 1789. Richard Evans was a specialist spoon maker from Shrewsbury who registered his mark at Goldsmiths Hall in May 1779. It's not quite clear if he continued working in Shrewsbury and had his pieces assayed in London or if he moved his workshop to London. He remained in business until around about 1800.

Condition is very good with just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected in an item that has been in use for over 230 years. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The salt spoon is 10.2cm / 4ins long and weighs 7.4g / 0.26oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the London date letter o for 1789, the George III duty mark and the R E makers' mark for Richard Evans.
