Description
This is a Victorian Sterling Silver fiddle pattern spoon of unusual design. They are sometimes referred to as long handled caddy spoons and sometimes as sugar spoons but I believe the former is more likely as the bowl is the right size for a measure of tea but would be excessive for a spoon of sugar. The spoon was made in London by William Robert Smily and dates to 1851. The Smilys were a family of silversmiths and spoonmakers who were working in London throughout the 19th century. William Robert Smily was the eldest of the second generation of Smily silversmiths and began as an apprentice to his father before establishing his own business in 1842. He died at just 40 years old in 1858.
This spoon is in very good condition with no dings or dents and just the superficial wear you would expect from around 170 years of use. The top of the stem has the initials AALJ elegantly engraved upon it.
The spoon is 14cm long and weighs a substantial 30.1g of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the back of the stem are well struck and clear to read. They are the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter "Q" for 1851, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the WRS makers' mark for William Robert Smily.
