Description

This is a very attractive late Victorian Sterling Silver Bonbon Dish. The dish has a low circular foot with line decoration. The body is pierced with a quatrefoil pattern interspersed with scroll and flower decoration rising to a rim with further scroll decoration. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

Originally intended for wrapped sweets, this beautiful dish could be used for nuts or snacks, for jewellery on a dressing table, for potpourri or simply as a decorative item in its own right.

The bonbon dish is made in Sheffield by renowned silversmiths James Dixon & Sons and dates to 1895. It was retailed by the famous jewellers Z. Barraclough & Sons of Leeds. James Dixon founded his company with partner Thomas Smith around 1806. In the 1820s, Smith withdrew and was replaced by James Dixon's eldest son, followed by his other sons and the James Dixon & Sons name was established. The firm was highly successful and remained in business until the 1980s when it was absorbed into British Silverware.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no damage to the pierced sections and just the bare minimum of superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 125 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The dish is 15.2cm / 6ins in diameter across the top rim and stands 2.9cm / 1.1ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 110.4g / 3.9oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the Gothic date letter c for 1895 and the distinctive J.D & S makers' mark for James Dixon & Sons. It also has the retail stamp for Z. Barraclough & Sons of Leeds.

Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the dish.
