Description

This is an elegant Edwardian Cut Glass Dressing Table Pot with a Sterling Silver Lid in the Art Nouveau style. The glass pot is oval with plain sides and a star cut base. The lid is embossed with a design of flowers and swirls surrounding a blank central cartouche. The inside of the lid is gilded.

The dressing table pot is made in Birmingham by silversmiths Johnson, Durban & Co Ltd and dates to 1904. Founded in 1878, Johnson, Durban & Co are best known for their good quality silver plate tea sets but also produced some very fine Sterling Silver pieces primarily aimed at a female clientele such as perfume bottles, buckles, dressing table sets and thimbles.

Condition is very good with no chips or cracks in the glass and just a few very minor dings in the silver lid plus the superficial surface wear that you have to expect after over 115 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The pot measures 9.2cm / 3.6ins by 6.2cm / 2.4ins and stands 5.1cm / 2ins high. The lid by itself weighs a very respectable 21.5g / 0.76oz of solid Sterling Silver and all in the pot weighs 193g / 6.8oz.

The hallmarks on the side of the lid are a little rubbed but still ok to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter e for 1904 and the J.D & Co Ld makers' mark for Johnson, Durban & Co Ltd.
