Description

Here we have a fine quality, heavy George V Sterling Silver Four Slice Toast Rack. The toast rack has a rectangular base with rounded ends, high arched dividers, four bracket feet and an oval finger ring handle. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The toast rack is made in Sheffield by famous silversmiths James Dixon & Sons and dates to 1912. Founded around 1806 by James Dixon and Thomas Smith, they became James Dixon & Sons in the 1820s when Smith left and was replaced by William Dixon and James Dixon Jr. A hugely successful company, they produced silverware, electroplate and later pioneered the use of stainless steel. Dr Christopher Dresser produced designs for the company in the 1880s including his famous teapots. They ceased trading in the 1980s and were absorbed into British Silverware.

Condition is extremely good with no dings, dents or damage and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 110 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The toast rack is 8.7cm / 3.4ins long by 6.3cm / 2.5ins wide and stands 11.2cm / 4.4ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 105.7g / 3.7oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the Gothic date letter u for 1912 and the distinctive J.D & S makers' mark for James Dixon & Sons.

Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the toast rack.
