Description

Here we have a very fine pair of George III Sterling Silver Table Salts with their original blue glass liners. The salts are oval in shape with raised ends and stand on four claw and ball feet. There is pierced decoration at each end, a pierced band around the top of the body and a beaded rim. Both salts have the initials W G elegantly engraved in a cartouche on the front. The blue glass liners have star cut bases.

The salts are made in London in 1786, most probably by William Stephenson. There are a number of London silversmiths who had very similar W.S marks around this time but Stephenson was the most active in producing tableware rather than flatware. They are very well made and elegant items.

Condition is remarkably good for their age with just a small amount of salt corrosion on the insides, no damage to the pierced sections and just the bare minimum of superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 235 years of good service. There are no chips or cracks in the blue glass liners. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each salt is 8cm / 3.1ins long, 6.1cm / 2.4ins across and stands 5.5cm / 2.1ins high. The two salts together, without the glass liners, weigh in at a substantial 101.6g / 3.6oz of solid Sterling Silver. Including the glass liners they weigh a total of 240.5g.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the bodies, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter l for 1786, the George III duty mark and the W.S makers' mark that is probably for William Stephenson.

Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the salts.
