Description

Here we have a very good quality Edwardian Sterling Silver Cigarette Case. The case is roughly square with attractrive engine turned decoration back and front and a gilt interior. The back of the case is curved to fit comfortably into a pocket. The central cartouche on the front has been stylishly engraved with the initials O S H.

The cigarette case was made in Birmingham by silversmiths Horace Woodward & Co Ltd and dates to the end of the Edwardian era in 1910. Horace Woodward joined the firm of Cartwright & Hirons as a partner in 1853 and took full control in 1865 when George Cartwright retired. The firm manufactured in Birmingham and had a showroom in London's prestigious Hatton Garden district. They were taken over by Adie Brothers Ltd in 1919.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 110 years of good service. There is some tobacco marking to the gilt interior but the gold plating is in overall good condition. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The cigarette case measures 8.3cm / 3.2ins by 7.3cm / 2.9ins and is 1.4cm / 0.55ins deep. It is designed to hold cigarettes in both halves. It weighs in at a substantial 101.1g / 3.5oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on the inside of the case are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter l for 1910 and the distinctive quatrefoil H W & Co Ld makers' mark for Horace Woodward & Co Ltd. The other half has just the lion passant and date letter l as per normal.

Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the cigarette case.
