Description

Here we have a top quality set of six George V Sterling Silver Coffee Spoons with a Golfing theme. The stem of each spoon is made up of three golf clubs bound around the middle with a, rather large, golf ball as a finial sitting on the heads of the clubs. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The coffee spoons are made in Birmingham by world famous silversmiths Elkington & Co, with three of them dating to 1925 and three to 1926. This was a common practice for retailers to mix up spoons from different years when putting sets together. Founded in 1836, Elkington took out the world's first patent for electroplating in 1838. They always ran their Sterling Silver business alongside their electroplating business and their silverware is of consistently fine quality. In 1963 the company was amalgamated with Walker & Hall and Mappin & Webb to form British Silverware Ltd.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after nearly 100 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

As you would expect from Elkington, these are well made spoons in a good gauge of silver. Each coffee spoon is 11cm / 4.3ins long and the set of six together weighs in at a substantial 75.2g / 2.65oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on the undersides of the bowls are just a little rubbed but still easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, either the date letter A for 1925 or B for 1926 and the distinctive E & Co makers' mark for Elkington & Co.

Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the spoons.
