Description

This is a smart George V Sterling Silver Pepper Shaker from just before the First World War. The pepper shaker is urn shaped with a part-reeded body above a spreading pedestal foot. The shaker top has a turned finial. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The pepper shaker is made in Sheffield by world famous silversmiths Walker & Hall and dates to 1912. Founded by George Walker in 1845, he was joined in partnership by Henry Hall in 1853 and Walker & Hall was created. They were a hugely successful company with showrooms around the UK and across the world. In 1963 they merged with Elkington & Co and Mappin & Webb to form British Silverware Ltd with Mappin & Webb retaining ownership of the name today.

Condition is good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect in an item of this age and use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The pepper shaker stands 9.2cm / 3.6ins high and is 3.6cm / 1.4ins across. It weighs in at 34.4g / 1.2oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on the side of the body and the rim of the lid are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield (on the body only), the date letter u for 1912 and the distinctive W & H in a pennant makers' mark for Walker & Hall.
