Description

Here we have a very good quality George III Sterling Silver Serving Spoon. The spoon is in the Old English Feather Edge with Shoulders pattern. This is a distinctive pattern that is particularly associated with the 1770s, although later examples are known.

The top of the stem is engraved with a crest of a lion rampant holding a boar's head. This is the crest of Lord Carbery. The holder of the title at this point in time was George Evans, the 3rd Baron Carbery, the builder of Laxton Hall in Northamptonshire around the time this spoon was made and it may well have been part of a service commissioned for that stately home.

The serving spoon was made in London by silversmith William Turton and dates to 1774. Turton registered his mark at Goldsmiths Hall in October 1773 and described himself as a smallworker, which simply means he made flatware and other small pieces of tableware. He remained active into at least the late 1780s and possibly later.

Condition is good with only a few small dings in the bowl, which has also been rounded and the superficial surface wear that you would expect after nearly 250 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The spoon is 22.4cm / 8.8ins long and weighs a substantial 61.9g / 2.2oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are somewhat rubbed, as you would expect after this period of time, but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter T for 1774 and the W.T makers' mark for William Turton.
