Description

This is an attractive late Victorian Sterling Silver Mustard Pot with its blue glass liner. The pot is octagonal in shape and stands on a pedestal foot. The body has an arched pierced design all the way round, whilst the lid is domed with a fan shaped thumb rest. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The mustard pot is made in Birmingham by Benjamin Thomas Greening and dates to 1899. Greening was a silverware and jewellery manufacturer, wholesaler and retailer with a factory in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter and a showroom in London's prestigious Hatton Garden district. Founded in 1899, they were still in business in the mid-1920s.

Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that would expect in an item of this age and use. The blue glass liner is in good condition with just a very small chip in the rim. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The mustard pot is 9cm / 3.5ins from rim to handle, 5cm / 1.9ins across and stands 6.5cm / 2.5ins high. Without the blue glass liner it weighs 58.3g / 2oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together it weighs in at 98.9g / 3.5oz.

The hallmarks on the side of the body are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter z for 1899 and the B.T.G. makers' mark for Benjamin Thomas Greening.
