Description

This is a good quality Mid-Century Sterling Silver Tea Strainer and Stand. The tea strainer is round with a gadrooned rim and fretwork handles. The stand rests on three paw feet with acanthus topped legs. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The tea strainer and stand are made in Birmingham by J.B. Chatterley & Sons Ltd and date to 1968. The firm registered their first mark in Birmingham in 1896 and were still going in the 1990s. They made a very broad range of household, table and personal silverware.

Condition is generally very good with just a slight ripple in the upper rim of the stand and the superficial wear that you would expect after over 50 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The tea strainer is 11.1cm / 4.4ins from handle to handle, 5.8cm / 2.3ins across the bowl and 1.7cm / 0.67ins deep. The stand is 6.4cm / 2.5ins across the top rim and 4cm / 1.6ins high. All together the set weighs in at a very respectable 88.5g / 3.1oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on the stand are nice and clear to read. The ones on the underside of the strainer are a little rubbed but still also clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter T for 1968 and the J B C & S Ld makers' mark for J.B. Chatterley & Sons Ltd.

Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the set.
