Description

This is an elegant set of six Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Teaspoons. The spoons have flowing scroll decoration on the upper part of the stems surmounted by a bead framed cartouche and a fan finial. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The teaspoons are made by Josiah Williams & Co of Bristol and assayed in London in 1912. With a history dating back to around 1818, Josiah Williams & Co were the largest firm of British silversmiths outside of London, Birmingham & Sheffield. As Bristol didn't have an assay office their items were sent first to Exeter and, after that office closed, to London for hallmarking. They ceased trading at the start of the Second World War.

Condition is generally very good with the exception of one spoon which has a slightly misshapen rim to its bowl plus the superficial surface wear across the set that has to be expected after 110 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each teaspoon is 10.5cm / 4.1ins long and the set of six together weighs in at a very respectable 63.0g / 2.2oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on the undersides of the bowls are somewhat rubbed but still easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter r for 1912 and the GJ over DF makers' mark for George Jackson and David Fullerton of Josiah Williams & Co.
