Description

Here we have an attractive, high quality set of five late Victorian Sterling Silver Coffee Spoons in the Georgian Revival style. The spoons are in the Hanoverian pattern with upturned ends and have bright cut decoration along both edges of the stems. A letter B is stylishly engraved at the top of each stem.

The coffee spoons are made in London by renowned silversmiths William Hutton & Sons Ltd and date to 1896. William Hutton founded his firm in Birmingham in 1800 and then moved to Sheffield in 1832. Later they would open further premises both back in Birmingham and in London. The company remained in the Hutton family until 1930 when financial difficulties resulted in them being taken over by James Dixon & Sons.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 120 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each spoon is 10.7cm / 4.2ins long and the set of five together weighs in at a very respectable 47g / 1.6oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the undersides of the stems, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter a for 1896 and the distinctive W.H & Ss Ld makers' mark for William Hutton & Sons Ltd.
