Description

This is a good quality cased set of six George V Sterling Silver Coffee Bean Spoons. The coffee spoons have round bowls, slender stems and a black coffee bean as a finial. This design was very popular from the 1920s through to the 1950s.

The spoons are made in Birmingham by famous silversmiths Hukin & Heath and date to 1924. Founded in Birmingham by Jonathan Hukin and John Heath in 1855, the firm is best known for its collaboration with Dr Christopher Dresser and their exhibitions of his groundbreaking designs for them at their London showroom. Hugely successful, the firm remained in business up until 1953.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the most minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect after nearly 100 years of good service. The mock croc style box has a couple of scuffs to the corners but is in good overall condition with working clasp and hinges. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each spoon is 9.2cm / 3.6ins long and the set of six together, uncased, weighs in at a respectable 36.1g / 1.27oz.

The hallmarks, on the undersides of the bowls, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter z for 1924 and the H & H makers' mark for Hukin & Heath.
