Description

A distinctive arched Sterling Silver Toast Rack with scroll feet and a circular handle. The Toast Rack was made by silversmiths J.B. Chatterley & Sons, a well established firm who operated from premises in Newtown Road, Birmingham from the mid-1890s up until the mid-1990s. They made a broad range of silver tableware of consistently good quality. This is a well made toast rack in a good gauge of silver. It was assayed in Birmingham and dates to the end of World War II in 1945.

The Toast Rack is in generally good condition with only the minimal amount of wear you would expect over 75 years of use. There is a very small dent on the end bar above one of the feet and a little bit of roughness around the foot of one of the arches. It is entirely suitable for use on a breakfast table today or would make a good addition to any collection. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The toast rack is 9.6cm wide, 6.9cm deep and stands 10.6cm high to the top of the handle. It weighs in at a substantial 113.4g of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on one end of the base are well struck and clear to read. The hallmarks are the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter "V" for 1945 and the JBC & S Ld in a shield makers' mark for J.B. Chatterley & Sons Ltd.
